Tin Roof Cafe, A Healthy Restaurant that Feels Like Home

Walking up concrete steps, a white sign above my head reads ‘Tin Roof Cafe’ in bold black paint. As my parents and I made our way into this hidden gem, I began to understand why so many people have descended upon this uniquely set restaurant lately.

Since I got back to Kenya in September, it has been challenging to find restaurants that serve healthy, delicious meals that are dairy-free, gluten-free or meat-free. When a friend recommended Tin Roof Cafe a few weeks ago, I was itching to sample it! Located on Dagoretti Road in Karen, right opposite The Hub, we nearly missed the cafe but what a pleasure it was when we found it tucked away among an intriguing collection of shops called ‘The Souk’.

The cafe serves healthy cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. There’s a special feeling of having a meal at a friend’s home. I was torn between sitting indoors or outdoors, both of which have beautiful and simple decor to complement the relaxed atmosphere. I ultimately chose the beautiful verandah outdoors over the inviting lounge indoors which was a chance to enjoy the lovely sunshine that Sunday.

The menu is a combination of an exciting range of healthy ingredients. Your choice of drink will be one of you most difficult decisions picking among a range of delicious and refreshing juices and smoothies. Although the meal menu is brief, we were all pleasantly surprised by our meal choices which ranged from cauliflower rice to fillet steak to lemon and thyme chicken.

Tin Roof Cafe has devised an excellent addition to meals – a selection of salads at their salad bar. The salads are fresh and an exciting range. My favourites had to be the red cabbage and apple salad as well as the cannellini bean, tomato and onion salad! These both tasted more refreshing than other versions that I’ve tasted before. As I scraped the last bits of my meal off my plate, I simply wished that I had more. Luckily enough, you are welcome to have another serving of salad from the salad bar!

The food was great although the service was slow at times. This was easily made up for by the kind and attentive waitresses who served us.

It’s nearly impossible to walk out without grabbing something for yourself here. There is also an art gallery showcasing  paintings across its walls. Its definitely worthwhile to stop by on your way in or out of the cafe.

My lovely experience makes this cafe a top choice for a healthy and delicious meal away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Next time I would lov
e to try their breakfast menu. I’d love to know your experience if you’ve been here or if you do in future!
