A Walk On The Wild Side – Crescent Island, Naivasha

“We haven’t spotted the python today,” the head guide said. My eyes widened in shock and I suddenly had second thoughts about our expedition.

“A python?” I asked, nervously.

Artem seemed unmoved and I couldn’t understand why.

“Yes, she shows up once in a while but I’m sorry that you probably won’t get to see her today,” she replied excitedly as she wrote down our receipt.

Was she kidding? “Oh, I thought you were warning us not hoping for us to meet her!” My head rolled back in laughter.

My excitement for our walk through Crescent Island was heightened. After our two hour drive to Naivasha, I was ready to take on the wild!

As we walked down the hill towards the edge of the island, I was stunned into silence by the beauty of the scenery. The private island wildlife sanctuary is on the eastern side of Lake Naivasha; a hidden gem that I had only discovered a few days earlier and immediately jumped on the opportunity! It was an amazing twist to taking a safari; rather than driving around the park we got to walk among the yellow-barked trees in the serene and tranquil sanctuary.

At first, I was nervous but soon enough I was more than happy to get fairly close to the animals grazing or sprawled under tree shades in the afternoon’s glaring sunshine. Walking among giraffes, zebra, gazelles, waterbuck, wildebeest and a great array of bird species made this experience incredible.

There aren’t as many animals as you would see in a game park on safari but walking through the sanctuary is a unique experience I recommend. Plus, you might be lucky enough to spot the python!
