Both sit in the cereal aisle. Both contain oats, nuts, and dried fruit. But granola and muesli are quite different things – and knowing the difference helps you choose the right one for your mornings.
If you’ve ever stood in a supermarket aisle wondering whether to reach for granola or muesli, you’re not alone. The two look similar, they share many of the same ingredients, and they often get lumped together under the vague label of ‘healthy cereal’. But how they’re made, how they taste and how your body processes them are actually quite different.
What is Granola?
Granola is baked. Rolled oats, nuts, seeds, and a binding agent – usually a natural sweetener like honey or coconut sugar, and a fat like coconut oil – are mixed together and toasted in an oven until golden and crunchy.
Because it’s baked with a fat and sweetener, granola is denser in calories than muesli. It also tends to be more flavourful and more satisfying as a standalone snack – you can eat it dry, straight from the bag, and it holds up beautifully.
What is Muesli?
Muesli is raw. It’s a mixture of rolled oats, nuts, seeds, and dried fruit that hasn’t been baked or sweetened. It was originally developed by a Swiss physician in the early 1900s as a health food – simple, unprocessed, whole.
Because it’s not baked, muesli has a softer texture and a more neutral flavour. It’s typically eaten soaked in milk or yoghurt overnight (bircher muesli) or with warm milk in the morning. The oats absorb liquid and become creamy and easy to digest.

Which One is Better For You?
Neither is universally ‘better’ – it depends on what you need from your breakfast.
- Choose granola if you want something filling, flavourful, and satisfying. It’s ideal for active people, busy mornings, or anyone who needs a breakfast that keeps them going until lunch.
- Choose muesli if you prefer a lighter, lower-calorie breakfast with a softer texture. It’s particularly good for people with sensitive digestions, as the soaking process starts to break down the oats before you even eat them.
The key thing to watch – for both – is the ingredient list. Many commercial granolas are loaded with refined sugar and seed oils. Many commercial mueslis contain added sweeteners and cheap dried fruit packed in syrup. A short, honest ingredient list is always a better sign than a long one.
At Healthy Kajuju
Our granola is made with rolled oats, real Kenyan nuts, honey and coconut oil – baked low and slow for maximum crunch without burning. Our muesli is raw whole grain oats with nuts, seeds and dried fruit. Both are gluten free, dairy free and made without artificial flavours.
The choice between them really comes down to how you want your mornings to feel.
