My Natural Deodorants

I’m very  passionate about living a healthier lifestyle and at first it was mainly based on what I eat and my physical activity. However, I believe a healthier  and happier lifestyle is definitely based on more than meals and fitness. With time I’ve also become aware of how important it is to be careful about what I put on my body. I became very concerned with the long lists of chemicals and fragrances that I found in the products I used. It’s unfortunate that most of the products we use on a daily basis are filled with harmful chemicals.

Deodorant is an especially important example of this. It’s no secret many commercial deodorants and anti-perspirants contain harmful substances like aluminium.

At first I opted to make my own deodorant using baking soda, coconut oil and shea butter. Yup! It actually worked for a while and a dermatologist I met during this period was pleasantly surprised by its effectiveness. The only downside is that it would sometimes be messy but I think may try it out again in the future as I loved how simple  and cheap the ingredients were.

I then switched to ‘Weleda Wild Rose’ deodorant. Has anyone tried it? This is just one of the scents by this brand so you have a variety to choose from. I loved that it only contains essential oils and all-natural ingredients. Sadly I don’t think it worked as well as I wish it had for me but I know that some people have had amazing experiences using it so it’s definitely worth a try.
10007028-2I’ve now been using ‘Milk of Magnesia’ for several months and it’s worked very well so far. It’s affordable and lasts for so long! It’s made of hydrated magnesium carbonate and is used orally as an antacid and laxative so I feel reassured that I’m using something I can safely ingest! Another advantage is that it’s readily available in many chemists in both Nairobi and the UK. The only potential downside is that it’s in liquid form but you may either pour into a roll-on deodorant bottle and use it like any other deo or leave it open for a while to form a paste-like consistency. I apply it using my fingers and leave it to dry for about a minute and that’s all!

As a disclaimer, these suggestions are deodorants rather than anti-perspirants. This may be discomforting at first but I actually believe this is perfectly alright because sweating is a very normal and essential process of detoxification. Preventing this natural process may actually be harmful than good in the long run.

I’d love to know your experience if you’ve tried any naturaor if you try any soon! 🙂
